社群網路的繁榮線上構築了一個虛擬社會，用戶藉由發布生活狀態記錄生活，與朋友保持聯繫，這個虛擬社會與現實生活息息相關，卻有著顯著不同，相比於現實生活中男性主導的社交體系而言，社群網路上女性在參與度更高，主導社群媒體的潮流。

美國成年人使用社群網路的用戶資料顯示，女性幾乎在所有主流社群網路中用戶數都超過男性，其中 Pinterest 這類的貼圖社群在男性群體中僅有 8% 的人使用，Facebook、Tumblr、Pinterest、Instagram、Twitter 中成年女性的使用比例均超過男性，只有在職業社群 LinkedIn 中男性使用比例超過女性。
