美國國會搞得政府關門，但也把國會大廈變得空空蕩蕩像鬼屋。觀光客沒了，只有三兩警員上班，大樓內幾乎所有出入口都關閉，每間辦公室都三分之二以上職員放假，而且在家不能打黑莓機 (費用是政府出錢)。觀光客電梯人員、引導民眾旁聽議事的人員，都放無薪假。國會大廈裡六個餐館關五個，議員專用餐廳也關門，還開的則服務降級，不供自助餐，吃便當。理髮店、禮品店也不開。
