禪宗初祖達摩祖師，以楞伽經授於二祖慧可，直至五祖弘忍才改為金剛經(般若空宗)，宋朝之後，又逐漸改為楞嚴經，即使民國肇建之後，楞嚴經已然成為禪宗所依經典。

此宗不重經典之權威，但依經中背後所含之真理。但由六祖弟子所錄的《六祖法寶壇經》則可反映出惠能大師的思想及早期禪宗面貌，故為欲了解禪宗者所必讀。另《金剛經》及《維摩經》亦為禪宗精神所依者。
