希臘警方正試圖找出這名金髮、綠眼、皮膚白皙小女孩的真實身分。她叫瑪莉亞，四歲，與希臘中部吉普賽居住區的一戶人家一起生活，警方發現她與這家人長相完全不同，經ＤＮＡ檢驗，發現和他們毫無血緣關係，已將她暫交慈善機關「孩童的笑容」照拂。她可能是人口走私或綁架案的受害人，警方公布她的照片，希望家人前來相認，她可能來自南歐或東歐，且可能是從醫院被抱走。 警方於掃蕩吉普賽人非法活動時，發現了瑪莉亞。聲稱是她父母的一對男女，在不同地區登記不同數目的子女，根據文件，這對男女十個月內產下六名子女。小瑪莉亞平日的工作是上街乞討。
